It is this letter that provides our window into Matt Murdock’s early life as a costumed crime fighter (with a natty yellow number, no less) as he reminisces about how he first met & fell in love with Karen & how she gave him the nickname “The Man Without Fear”.

           Guardian Devil forms the second part of what I unofficially refer to as “The Karen Page Trilogy”. The story, that started in Born Again then continues in this volume by Kevin Smith & Joe Quesada & concludes in Jeph Loeb & Tim Sale’s Daredevil: Yellow, tells the story of the relationship between Matt Murdock & Karen Page, a woman who has had more dodgy career choices  than Stan Collymore.

                        It occurred to me the other day that in all the Classic Trades I’ve written so far, I haven’t yet had one from Marvel.  This was never intentional & a lot of my favourite comics have come out of the house of ideas.  So after some careful deliberation, reading & then an intense round of coin flipping I decide to give the Devil his due. Now, if you’re going to choose a classic Murdock caper then it probably should be something by Frank Miller. During his seminal run in the 80’s Miller turned a second class super hero, a second tier Spider Man villain & a second chance at love into one of the most influential crime sagas ever seen in four colours. Miller left & didn’t return to the Kitchen till 1986, when he, along with David Mazzucchelli, put Matt Murdock through his very own dark night of the soul.

So this weekend saw the British International Comics Show or BICS held at Millennium Point in Birmingham. Now in its fourth year its the UK’s largest specific  Comic convention and the guest list was impressively glittering with great names like Charlie Adlard, Howard Chaykin, Paul Cornell, Alan Davis, Andy Diggle, Pasqual Ferry and many many more. For Richard and myself (check the bios I’m James) it was only our second taste of a “proper” convention, and certainly our first full weekend at one our single day at Bristol earlier in the year, which gave us a taste but not the full flavour of the UK convention scene.

This was a book of some significance. Not only the 500^th issue for the man without fear, but also marked the closing of the often critically acclaimed run of Ed Brubaker. It’s also one of a glut of Marvel books that seem to be reaching milestones at almost the same point, with Spiderman, Thor, Hulk, and Captain America celebrating either 600th or 500th editions in recent months. All have come in a bumper sized edition packed with additional stories and re-printing of notable and historic tales. Why then has it taken me so long to feel like I want to pick up DD 500?. Have we been over gorged on Marvels backslapping, and have these “treats” been too much of a good thing?

It’s a cliché (but when did that ever stop us) that comic book characters have by and large, ludicrously impractical uniforms. Imagine trying to execute a high round house kick, for example, whilst wearing a butt splitting thong. While these costumes are pleasing on the eye, as the world of comics enters in to an ever more realistic universe, it befalls upon me to assist (once again they get more than their far share of free advice from this site) the big two in a redesign of some of the more impractical costumes in the comic book world, whilst giving an insight on where they have gone wrong in the past…

Ok. I admit it. I was short on ideas this week and I couldn’t think of 10 entries. So I’ve split it into 2 top 5’s just to keep you lucky people on your toes. I don’t know if anyone actually watched Pushing Daises, but it was quite good, evidently, not enough people watched it, because it got canned after 2 seasons. Then it got picked up again by DC comics who have decided to continue the story
